That's generally true, as the springs do wind tighter (to a smaller circumference/ diameter) at the ends. But that's why I said just 1/4 of a coil off of each end.

You could probably do up to 1/2 of a coil off of each end and still have it seat fine. You would run into other issues then though, like the spring being too short and possibly falling out at full droop.

And there is no general rule that you should only cut from the top or bottom. It's whatever works in the specific application. You just have to thoroughly assess the limits that you have to work within, be smart about it, and only cut a little bit at a time.
