That works, but the better solution would be to bring your own cup, one of the types that's designed for use in automobiles. Not only does this not spill, but it insulates the coffee even better, has a more appropriately-sized drinking hole, and it is infinitely reusable, consuming no additional non-renewable sources (i.e. styrofoam cups and plastic lids) every day.

The other good thing about bringing your own cup is they usually fill it up thus you getting more coffee for the same price :)

We did it all the time when I worked at A&W years ago.
