I use the driver side handle from time to time. The handles are there to help get in for some people. I've hung a few clothing articles in the rear too. hehe.

I can agree about the cupholders and wind issues. Then again, I never expected this car to be remarkable and therefore I'm not let down that it isn't remarkable.
2 things to remember: 1) you get what you pay for- the Yaris is one of the cheapest cars available in the country 2) it's a Yaris forum- when you start threads about negative aspects of the Yaris you are going to get flamed, often unfairly, but it's gonna happen

True, Tuck, but I don't believe these design flaws are a matter of "economy"; for instance, fewer (but better placed) cup holders would've costed LESS... Inserting two little stable loops vs. four flippable handles would've cost less; certainly omitting the MP3 jack would've cost less... The Suzuki Swift was a cheap econobox, yet you could open the windows without it "drumming" (and what's with the little side vents - that don't open -in the front windows; surely it would've saved money to skip those???). It's just bad design, alas... Still, it's the best of what's out there today; sadly, that's not saying much.

Problem is, not even Suzuki makes anything like the Swift anymore. Even a stripped SX4 is going to cost more than the Yaris and get worse Mpg than you do now.
My Sidekick and XL-7 were good vehicles for the money, but they had their flaws too. When my commute went from 12 miles/day to 124 miles/day, I had to consider retiring the larger vehicle, which even at 165K still had plenty of life in it. You can buy an aftermarket cup holder and some decent suspension components to make the Yaris better. Can you afford to trade it in against a Mini Clubman? Also consider that crash safety of your Yaris is considerably better than the Swift was, even though the vehicle is not noticeably larger or heavier. For me, a few interior quirks that I can change or live with is a small discomfort in exchange for having a reasonably strong and efficient commuter. |
