![]() ...a tooter adaptor flange would make it bolt on to a Yaris engine, although I don't know about the clearance or throttle body fitment issues. Can you post a pic of the manifold if it's aluminium? There's not much you could do if it's a plastic one. |

Wouldn't it be easier to take a honda fit HPD intake manifold and modify it to fit a yaris?
Both engines have about the same airflow requirements with the fit having more aggressive cams and a slightly higher rev limit. |

I just did a search for "2000 Celica 1.8 engine" and that pic came up, and didn't realize that there were two 1.8 engines. It's pretty obvious that it would favor top end performance as the runners are super short...

Getting manifolds sandblasted amounts to a good piece of change, so instead of paying someone else to blast them, I'm going to do them myself...
![]() ![]() The air compressor is suprizingly quiet because the motor turns at half speed 1,720 rpm. It's being broken in right now. The directions require running for a minimum of 20 minutes under no load to get the bearings all lubricated and to seat the rings. Glass beading sounds especially nice because it gives aluminium surfaces a nice smooth silky luster. I'm still hunting for a local source for glass bead blasting medium. Closest so far is in Moorpark. Last edited by tooter; 08-31-2012 at 01:16 AM. |

you can do other media like walnuts and some other random stuff that you wouldnt think of using. of course each one does a different job.

Yeah, I've been reading up on all of the options. Glass bead blasting really sounds the most intriguing because the tiny round glass balls micro "shot peen" the surface and relieve the forming stresses. I also really like the "closed pore" surface glass beading produces that's resistant to dirt and greasy fingerprints.

Picked up a blasting cabinet from Harbor Freight today...
![]() ![]() They had this one on display, but were selling another model that wasn't half as nice, so I prevailed upon the manager to sell me the older floor model at the sale price ($209). This one is superior because the cabinet and lower catch bin are not only larger, they're all a one piece welded unit, whereas the newer one was a bunch of bolted together sections which are highly likely to leak blasting medium. This one also has a separate glassed off compartment on the top for the flourescent lights while the newer one didn't. There are pickup tubes welded into the bottom bin to which you attach the blasting medium hose so that when you're blasting, the medium falls to the bottom of the tapered bin and is then picked up again. This allows automatic recirculation of the medium without any loss. |

As for blasting medium, I'm going with stainless steel balls as they make no dust and don't eventually fracture like glass beads do with repeated use. That will insure a consistently silky smooth lustrous shot peened surface.

![]() For 2012, they're: 117 hp @ 6,600 rpm; 106 ft lb of torque @ 4,800 rpm But that extra power comes at the cost of some gas mileage at an EPA rated 27 city, 35 highway... as compared to the 2012 Yaris at 33 city 38 highway. |

Since you guys are still waiting for Garm's results, here's the video of the tooter manifold dyno run to pacify you for a little bit...

I started blasting one manifold so far, but need more beads. By the time they make it into all of the corners of the cabinet, there aren't enough to be picked up from the bottom of the V bin!
![]() I already ordered more and they will be here in just a few more days. I'm using stainless steel blasting shot because the balls don't fracture like glass beads do. The tiny balls initially come covered with oxide and need to be "worn in" on a practice surface. I use a big brick of stainless steel, because that works best to shine up the balls for use. And as you continue to use the medium it gets harder and polishes better. Stainless steel bead blasting is a relatively new technology, so there's very little information to be found. I scoured the web and could only find one person selling the beads in small lots. The only other sellers are the manufacturers themselves... three in China and two in India, and their minimum order is 2,000 pounds! ![]() The beads give a nice low micro shot peened lustered surface without dimensionally altering the pieces. If there is a scratch on the surface, it remains there and just gets polished, so I'm going to do some surface prep with fine emery cloth before blasting. I'm just beginning to learn this as I go and am having lots of fun improving on my technique. ![]() Two more tooter adaptor flanges will come off the CNC machine tomorrow. After I pick them up, they'll go off to the welder, and then I'll blast the manifolds. I'll post a pic of the practice blasted surface tomorrow. |
