What I thought I'd do was

Thanks man.

I definitely didn't depressurize the fuel system first. How much of a problem will that be?

When you loosen the fuel rail, you'll get a bit of a shower. You might want to disconnect the connector where the plastic tubing meets the fuel rail, so you can wrap a rag around it while disconnecting to not make such a mess.
