My original remote works fine, I swapped the electronics into a new shell, the original shell started coming apart. I was hoping to finally after all these years get a second fob so both my wife and I have one just wont seem to take.

The EPC shows the 89070-52730 part as replacing the 89070-52860 one. Perhaps they really are not compatible. If you want, PM me your VIN, and I can tell you what part number came with your car.

Also, inside of the transmitter there should be a label on the electronics. Compare your old and new ones.

For example, the key that I have on hand (that came with a steering column that I bought off ebay for a project), says:

The "FCC ID:MOZB41TG" ones are what are normally found in a Yaris. The one that I have is from a 2006 Canadian Yaris, which is why it doesn't have the FCC ID.

Did you check the new one?

The new one doesnt have any writing on it at all

Now that I think about it, since it does not have any of the FCC info on it maybe it does need to be "programed" by the dealer. I am thinking I would be better off buying a used key and swapping the electronics into a new shell.

The lack of FCC info only means that it is likely a poor quality Chinese clone (as anything sold in the US that transmits RF has to have its FCC ID).

I think you are correct with the used key route.
