Why would a slow idle be bad?

One thing that REALLY annoys/disturbs me, is the cold engine RACING on startup. Dealer tells me, reasonably, that it's emissions laws - the Cat Converter needs to heat up fast to satisfy our goobermint keepers; and so Toyota complies with a screaming cold start.

But that's murder on an engine. So, to my way of thinking, a slow idle at startup, even temporary, would be nothing but good.
