It took a solid 20k miles for my Wife's Kia to loosen up properly, but I don't know about Toyotas. The problem with the Yaris is that it's a bit heavier than the Echo, and is geared lower in an attempt to make up the speed difference. I'd actually say with normal-ish driving that's not terrible mileage. Make a long pass down a freeway and you'll take in the high 30s all day, possibly 40s if conditions are decent as you keep the speed low.

Kia and Hyundai were fined BIG TIME last year for fudging mpg numbers. My better half drives a 12 Sportage and usually gets a check every year for a few hundred dollara from the dealership. Part of their settlement with the government. It's to pay for the customer's extra gas costs. And that is for the life of the car.
