I generally engage 1st gear at around 1200-1500 RPM when starting from stop, shift to 2nd as soon as car is rolling halfway decently, and then 3rd+ in the 2000-2900 RPM range - depending on circumstances.

When I want/need to get up-to-speed ASAP then I will shift 2nd+ in the 3000-3600 RPM range. I've been averaging 38-MPG since getting my m/t Yaris SE about 7 weeks ago (95% city/town driving).

Anticipating when you will need to stop/slow ahead and mostly "coasting" while you wait for the light-switch or whatever is also a great way to increase MPG a bit, as well as saving wear-and-tear on the clutch and brakes. I routinely do that with street lights, off-ramps from highway, etc. Defensive driving FTW!
