Accidental transmission abuse

So I was going up a hill in 2nd gear in my automatic 2nd gen yaris sedan, and when I tried to put it back in D it went all the way to neutral for a split second before I put it back in D. My foot was on the gas, it rev'd pretty loud but it didn't seem to jerk like you would expect when it went back in D. No tire chirps or anything.

What I want to know: will the ECU prevent things like this from damaging the trans?
Gotta stop the accidental natural drops lol.

I don't think it will but don't worry about it. You didn't wreck it.

Just lift your foot off the gas when going from 2nd to D next time.

You'll be fine, it was once. Just don't make it a habit and you're trans will last a long time

Ok thanks. I'm still pretty worried about it, though. I was going about 25 mph at the time I wonder if that lessened the shock. I tend to be super paranoid about these things. Maybe get new transmission oil?

Meh, if you're due to a Trans oil change then go for it. If you're not then i'd say don't bother. Seriously, it hasn't done anything to your Trans. If it was shifting funny or making a noise after the fact then that' different. Toyota tranny's tend to be bomb proof

EDIT: Finally found the ATF fluid dipstick and its very purple. Is that normal for this fluid?

if so, use D all the time and don't pretend you drive a stick shift.

good time to change the fluid. the WS ATF does change to purple with time and oxidation. the newer batches don't seem to do it.

Unless you're going up, or a down a hill. Then shift down. Uphill, to prevent the transmission from bouncing back and forth between gears, and downhill, to utilize engine braking rather than riding the pedal. Depends on the kind of hill we're talking about, of course. Don't bother in Kansas, but do watch it in Colorado.
