I fixed it that same night. Crazy idea that actually worked....
Drilled the hatch side where the mount goes big enough to put a toggler snap toggle in, and also drilled the mount itself. So now the mount is anchored to the hatch as if it were a TV or wall fixture. Cost me just the togglers I had on hand or about 4 bucks. I think the mount has the most pressure on it while closing the hatch as the strut is pushing against the weld. Its the same length strut so I don't think its over extending.... That's more of the hatch mount to the car frame issue. If theframe cracks where the bolts are that would suck.
