Unfortunately my wife has never learnt to drive a manual, and refuses to do so. So I'm stuck with having an automatic.

I can't understand why someone uses an automatic gearbox in such a small engine. Personally I have the 1.3L with the 101hp and a 6 speed manual. I couldn't be happier.

Such a small engine does not need and auto. And especially toyota's auto is a crap (at least that's what I have read).
The only gearbox I could use in such a small engine is only the DSG from VW. They have made a great job with it.
Otherwise autos are for engines 2.0L and up.

Here in Greece manual is the most popular choice. An auto has 2000€ at least extra. And I really can't see why. Especially in such a small car they are crap. (Of course I don't compare them with the expensive cars that their gearboxes are engineer masterpieces.)
