typicaly speaking steel wheel nuts will useualy have a different taper to mag nuts, but its not always the case and can vary wheel to wheel, if the wheels have a steel cone in them they are often made to use a steel wheel nut, if they are raw coned aluminum then they useualy need a wide flange mag nut

but everything changes wheel to wheel manufacturer to manufacturer...more often than not you cant even take their word for it and need to check once you have the wheels in hand
