I generally fill up the crank case just before the oils starts to run out the the valve cover....one can never have too much oil in their motor...why stop at 4 quarts? Just fill her up and rest assured your engine is well protected...I think the last time I changed the oil it took 9 or 10 quarts...

^^^

Here is what I do and it works quite well.

Buy 4 quarts of oil.

Pour in 3.5 quarts. I use 1 of the first 3 bottles to measure out a half a quart, and keep the other half.

Drive it. Let it sit on a level surface and check it again. My oil level is always perfect to the top of the dipstick fill line. If it needs any more, add it in small increments.

Works perfectly every time.

My first oil change I did myself I put in 3.7 quarts of 0-30 amsoil. And it registered over the top bar on the fill bar on the oil stick. So I emptied some. I now just put in 3.5 quarts and it winds up being just about right with the fill bar on the oil stick. Thats with changing the oil filter as well.
