I love this thread..... yellow tops are not made for everyday use.... they are meant as a back up battery, not to start a car on a daily basis

So far the new yellow top is drastically better on all fronts.

The old one was giving 12.1-12.4 volts with the car turned off whereas the new one is a solid 13 volts.

I got an alternator and battery tester and will be buying an agm charger soon to keep it at its tip top.

my blue top rested at 13.2-13.4 without using a trickle charger. Its all about having a good alternator... I was running a 160amp alt.

if only a HO alt could be made, I thought we had a person on YW who got a 180amp made for like 500 bucks but i contacted one of the high profile custom alternator makers and he said that a HO alt isnt available for our cars yet because our alternators use a sort of square pin wiring inside or something like that as opposed to the traditional round wiring.

go to an alternator shop, and see if you can talk to the guy who does alt re-builds... Try and see if he can build a new alt using the stock casing. Tell him you want a high output alt, NOT A REWOUND alt. Something that can do say 120amps or more at 2000rpms. yeah it'll cost ya... I paid $400 installed on mine for my mazda back in like 03.

It might just be going bad. I had a yellow top for 5 years and when it was time to go, it was time to go. How old is it?

so about these blue tops. i knot they are classified as "marine" but what does that really mean. what's the difference between a blue deep cycle and a yellow deep cycle. if it's cold temperature tolerance that would be wicked awesome. ak gets a tad cold every now and then.

deep cycle is deep cycle. its meant to sit in active and hold a charge for a long period, then get hit with a powerfull alternator or charger and not blow up.

sorry, but most car owners with audio systems have over 1000 watts of amplifiers sucking the ever living life out of their battery and forcing the alternator to do as much as it can to keep the battery charged up. a car battery needs to be able to handle the draw of daily starts, and never have to be hooked to a battery charger, and still power the audio system.

a deep cycle battery may work for the job, but its not a good move to use one in a car, because the sucker will die long before it would in a boat or RV.

if you wanna use two batteries, with the deep cycle stashed in the trunk and wired to your normal battery and charging system for those days when you want to pound the crap out of your subs and not have to worry about frying your alternator, good for you.

if you wanna toss a yellowtop in a car with a stock charging system, stereo gear, HID headlamps, and a underdrive pully...well, expect the battery to fail.

simple as that. anything else beyond this is just hashing the same crap thats been said in the last 3 pages of this post.
