Can this Be? A non-hybrid, USA car that beats the Yaris's MPG rating?

The one thing the Yaris has over all its competitors is its superior gas mileage. Do you think it's going to get dethroned soon?

Here's the 2011 Ford Fiesta

USA car? Its a Fiesta, a true european car. It came to the US because smaller cars with lower gas consumption became popular. I drove this Fiesta from 2008-2009 as a company car. It had a turbocharged Diesel engine and was able to make 60-65 mpg.

There are dozens of cars in Europe and Asia which can compete with the Yaris and i am sure many of them could make it to the US soon.

Unfortunately, no. It seems that we don't get most of what is available to the rest of the world. You spoke of a diesel Fiesta, yeah, we probably won't ever get that. Heck, we can't even get the Yaris in diesel.

Pretty much unless it's a truck or large SUV, the only way we see a diesel is from the high end manufacturers that charge an arm and a leg.

As for smaller cars and lower gas consumption becoming popular in the US, you clearly havn't driven on the roads here lately. They are still littered with large gas guzzlers. Even most of the cars on the roads are gas guzzlers.

Yeah, I know that European cars are vastly more fuel efficient than USA cars. To me, I am just glad that Ford decided to go with bringing this car here. My primary reason for buying the Yaris was because of its MPG.

Maybe these cars are not popular in general but they are getting MORE popular else they would not sell them in the US. Diesel engines are expensive maybe you will not see any small car with a diesel engine.

Small cars are very, very common here since the costs of driving a car are getting higher and higher every year. And btw our streets and parking lots are smaller, too.

that is with SFE package which has speed control. the computer will
not let you waste gas, and added aerodynamics, and thin spare

According to specs the SFE package includes:
• Rear Tire Deflectors
• Underbody Shields
• Blockers on Lower Grille
• 15" P195/60R15 T Rated Tire
• 15" Painted Aluminum Wheel
• Spare Wheel and Wheel Cap
• Speed Control

more popular isn't saying much at all, especially when they started out as no one wanted to touch them because they were thought of as death traps. Pretty much anything is more popular than that.

Add that to the fact that the profit margin on these cars is tiny, and no dealer really wants to sell them unless they have to.

Then few people believe me when i tell them it really is fun to drive. They think i am lying.

while it may be lessening, there is still a huge stigma attached to micro's.

Wait till the EPA gets a hold of it, they'll pull those numbers down. The testing of the Yaris must have been especially lead footed, I've never got less than 36mpg, ever and almost always get 42-48. I thought about trading to a prius, but after reading over priuschat I realized my current car gets almost as good as they do for a fraction of the cost of a prius.

the epa tests are baloney. they do their test, then take 10 or 20% off the top to try and get real numbers.

the test itself is inside, computer controlled, and out of date by at least 50 years.

I wonder where they got those numbers from then? Are the 30 city / 40 hwy numbers probably Ford's MPG and not the EPA's?

Hmmm....I drive very lightly (I should know, I get honked and tailgated), and yet, I usually average 37MPG combined, so to me, the EPA numbers are right on the spot. However, 3 times I have gotten 41MPG, so it is possible to get higher than the EPA.

epa numbers for the 07 were 36/40, but 08+ they went down to 29/35.... the 07 numbers are right on, but afterwards.... crap.

And by the way, talking about ford mpg... I'd believe it. They listed their v6mustang with 305hp at 30mpg, and epa certified it at 31mpg. Ford hasn't really been known to exaggerate alot of their numbers, usually low balling mpg/power/torque.

The EPA revised their mileage test procedure for all '08 models, not just the Yaris. They felt it better reflected "real world" mileage being reported by average drivers. I think it does. Have you looked around lately at how badly the average driver drives?

Well, it's better to say they quit doing it a long time ago. They used to buff up their numbers quite a bit, which is how Chevies came to dominate Fords in bracket racing back in the '60s-'70s.

I've had several Fords over the years and they have all proven to be very unreliable, think i'll stick with Toyota.
I also noticed that baby crap color is becoming popular as i've seen it on Kia's and Hyundai's

It least it doesn't have those wide straight chrome bars across the front. The usual styling theme from Ford recently is FUGLY! This one's not bad looking.
