The 1NR-FE does not have a can type filer. It has a housing with an insert that goes inside of it, so the filter tool is not one of the typical off-the-shelf ones and the size does not vary. It is 64mm x 14 flats. This is what it looks like:

Less waste, you only replace the element.

I have a Pure Power filter for the Yaris, which is reusable - although I only use it every other oil change, because I hate taking the time to clean while I am changing the oil.

Pure Power manufactures the K&N reusable filter as well: http://www.knfilters.com/oilfilter.htm

Thankyou very much for your detailed reply C.T. You say the filter is 64mm. I am given to understand that a 64mm removal tool will not fit and a 65mm. is too large. I have been told that Toyota have made it around 64.5mm. which causes the problem. Have I been told correctly? or will a 64mm. 14 flute tool fit?
Regards Geoff Peace.

My understanding was that when Toyota first started using that filter setup that people could not find standard sockets to fit it (the in between 64 and 65 issue). Since then there are Toyota specific ones, like the ones above, which are likely a fraction between 64 and 65mm.

Filter removal tool TOY 640 has now arrived. All the way from the USA! Does anyone know the correct tightening torque please? The filter retainer seems to be plastic, so I do not want to over tighten, then again I do not want to undertighten and cause an oil leak.
Regards Geoff Peace.
