If you are comparing models before buying though, you are most likely going to see all hp numbers expressed as whp, or at least that's what I was looking at before I bought.

I'm sure you are right, I guess we must have getting info from different sources. For example, one place I looked was Toyota website, and 106hp is what they show under specs; actually, everything I looked at online had the same figures. Since this is the info I used to compare cars I just thought redduck might find it useful.

Almost exclusivly, hp is expressed as flywheel horsepower. Thats what manufacturers report, thats what magazines use.

Auto Dynos however report wheel horsepower (whp, or fwhp or rwhp for front or rear wheel hp). A very expensive engine dyno will tell flywheel hp - and you have to test the engine out of the car for obvious reasons. The reason manufacturers give flywheel hp is because they test the output of the engine in R&D and engineering, not after the car is assembled.
