Throwout Bearing not under powertrain????
Does anyone know if the throwout bearing should fall under the 5 year/60,000 mile powertrain Toyota warranty? My car is at the dealer and they isolated the noise (chirping) to either the pressure plate part of the clutch or the throwout bearing. I have 33,000 miles on my 2010 Yaris. Either way they said it's not covered under the factory warranty and will cost me $1018.00 if Toyota parts are used or $854.00 if they buy the parts locally. I'm not sure if I'm being "had" or not. My car has always been driven gently and I don't ride the clutch or anything. I know how to drive a manual, I've been driving them for YEARS. Heck, I don't even hold the clutch in at stoplights.
So much for Japanese quality. Toyota quality for that matter. |

Straight from the website.. I don't think you have had your for over 60 months so I do believe that the transmission is covered under the powertrain warranty.
http://www.toyota.com/owners/web/pag...ta_%2Bwarranty Throw that in thier face. I can't read the warranty guide while I am at work right now, but read through it. Next time you go, ask for a manager and have this with you. If you still have your owners manual, this info should be in there also

I have always been under the impression that the release bearing is wearable item just like brake parts. This is how I have had manufacturers explain it to me. BTW, I have had release bearings go in many vehicles. It may say Toyota on the box, but it is the same manufacturing and tooling process as for any other manufacturer. That being said clutch components are just as susceptible to time as other things like oils and fluids. The release bearing can actually dry out by lack of use just as much as over use. That being said paying that much money for a release bearing to be replaced is ludicrous and I would check all over the place. You can remove the transmission without pulling the engine and the bearing can be replaced in 8 hours easily for dis-assembly, removal, replacement, and reassembly. Hell, if you actually put your mind to it you can do it much faster. It sounds to me like the stealership is trying to take you for a "book" price ride. I am hoping that they are making the quote with the clutch included?

I'd fight it.
My Yaris (and 2005 Scion xB) had the clutch go out at 28,000 and 35,000 miles respectively. Scion fought me on the xB, but did replace it under warranty. In fact, they had to replace it twice. When the clutch was slipping on the Yaris, they replaced it with no questions asked. No throw-out bearing should go that early unless you're riding the clutch like a madman (or madwoman).

Thanks! I was looking for a copy of the manual, it's in my car at the dealer. The guy told me anything to do with the clutch was under the basic 36 month/36,000 mile warranty. I see where the clutch COVER is included in the 5 yr/60000 mile powertrain warranty. I have no choice now, I told them 2 hours ago to fix it, but I'm opting for the non-OEM parts.
Is the throwout bearing part of the clutch assembly? One thing, now that I think about it, the past 8-9 months the clutch was a little sticky on damp days until I drove it 2-3 miles. This comes at a bad time. I lost my job of 20+ years in August and the economy still sucks here in Indianapolis, at least for secretary jobs. I'm struggling enough with making my car payment on unemployment compensation. Thankfully, I have an interview with Manpower as a last resort on Thursday, maybe they can find something for me. No matter the outcome, I will be filing a dispute with Toyota over this. I've never EVER had a clutch problem with any of my former cars, not even my car before the Yaris, a 1997 Chevy Cavalier, it had 108,000 miles on it and never gave me any transmission problems. |

It seems the FJ Cruiser has problems with throwout bearings too.

I don't know if the 1NZ-FE has weird clutch or what. I've owned:
92 Mitsubishi Expo LRV 99 Nissan Sentra 2001 Ford Foucs 2000 Honda Civic 1998 Civic Coupe 1998 Civic Sedan 1998 Honda Prelude 2005 Scion xB 2007 Toyota Yaris 2009 Suzuki SX4 2010 Suzuki SX4 2012 Subaru Forester 2013 Subaru WRX 1995 Suzuki Sidekick Of all those vehicles, only the xB and the Yaris have had clutch issues. This is since 1994, by the way.

My car is back with the new clutch. I opted for the cheaper of the two repairs, using non-genuine Toyota parts. They installed a Sachs clutch kit...Wow! What a difference in the way it feels. I guess when you drive something that's going bad on a day-to-day basis, you don't realize when something isn't quite right. My original clutch was feeling "gritty" at the friction point; I can't think of another word to describe it but gritty-ness. I was thinking it was like that all along. The new one is as smooth as silk. And no more chirping sound. My "nice" complaint letter is already on the way to Toyota.

You just said it.. it's 8hours to replace that bearring. My Toyota dealer charges 115$/hr (CAD), so 1000$ is a fair price i guess.. |

The old Beetle had a proceedure in the official service manual to service the throwout bearing. You drilled a hole in the transmission housing and inserted a plastic wand attached to a spray can of lube. There were dimentions to place the hole and a lenth of plastic tube to be inserted. Then you sprayed the bearing.

Finally heard from Toyota this afternoon. ZERO reimbursement from them; I would have been happy with $100...sorry, but a clutch to ME isn't a wear and tear item. I've driven American cars more than 100,000 miles with never a clutch problem. This is the first clutch that's ever gone out on me.
The Yaris was my first Toyota, and it will be my last. I'll go back to Honda when I want another car. |

Too bad to hear that. Don't blame you to make your next vehicle something else since you feel the way that you do. I personally hate DBW.
