I have always been under the impression that the release bearing is wearable item just like brake parts. This is how I have had manufacturers explain it to me. BTW, I have had release bearings go in many vehicles. It may say Toyota on the box, but it is the same manufacturing and tooling process as for any other manufacturer. That being said clutch components are just as susceptible to time as other things like oils and fluids. The release bearing can actually dry out by lack of use just as much as over use. That being said paying that much money for a release bearing to be replaced is ludicrous and I would check all over the place. You can remove the transmission without pulling the engine and the bearing can be replaced in 8 hours easily for dis-assembly, removal, replacement, and reassembly. Hell, if you actually put your mind to it you can do it much faster. It sounds to me like the stealership is trying to take you for a "book" price ride. I am hoping that they are making the quote with the clutch included?
