As long as the MAF is in a tube the same size as stock, it doesn't make any difference what size the pipe is on either side of it.

Sure. Why not?

Quote:
- Could you use the stock MAF tube instead of chopping the Weapon R?
No, it wouldn't work because the Weapon R intake tube adapts the 2.5 BLOX velocity stack to the 2.25 throttle body flange. And second, the rubber intake tube isn't rigid enough to support the freestanding stack and filter...

Quote:
- How does the quality of the BLOX compare to other less expensive kit, e.g. the stuff at AutoZone/AutoValue/NAPA/etc?
I don't know about any of the other stuff, but BLOX is first rate. The intake profile is parabolic, and is complete to 180 degrees. It's a beautifully simple practical design...

I especially like the BLOX dry filter as it has no oil issues. It perfectly seals the stack and removes instantly and easily for cleaning.

Quote:
- Does having the stock MAF on a 2.5" tube cause issues?
Nope, no issues whatsoever.
This is because the tube the MAF is in is 2.25". You can see the reduction in diameter takes place in front of the MAF.

Quote:
I was told (on these forums) that the slower air velocity in a larger diameter tube would lead to wonky behavior from the ECU. I'm assuming you haven't had issues to this point, yes?
You were told correctly. The intake diameter can be anything you want upstream...

...as long as it reduces down to the proper 2.25 diameter where the air flows over the MAF.

Since I'm here, I took a whack at grinding one of the runner entrances. The amount of weld I can remove is limited so as not to weaken the manifold, but at least I was successful in removing the protruding weld swirls as I'm sure they cause turbulence right at the critical point of entry. I was also able to open up the entrance a bit wider for a freer flow.

This is before for contrast...

So if the air all has to flow through the narrower section, doesn't it negate the larger diameters in front of/behind the MAF? I haven't done fluid mechanics yet, so I'm just going off what I've read/heard/seen.

Impedance to flow is also a function of length. The MAF section is 4 inches long and the only element of every Yaris intake that is absolutely necessary if you don't want to be throwing codes. However, you could experiment with larger tubing, MAF sensor, and a matching ECU from a larger engine just to see if it might work.

Yes.

We arrived at a really neato design and I should have the new throttle body base plates any day now. The CNC machinists have been very busy so they fit me in when they have the time because my parts are such small runs. I can't wait to get them and will post pics as soon as they're done.

This tooter is going to be a very strange one!

What was wrong with the old plate? The one I used was pretty awesome

There's nothing wrong with them. I still stock and sell them with the complete manifolds and with the flanges in the Build-Your-Own-Manifold kits.

But I'm totally into experimenting now...

...with a completely new scratch built plenum for the tooter. So it needs a radically different design throttle body base.

Smooth flow is what I'm fascinated with. There's a certain inherent beauty in flow design. It's like creating a work of art.

You need to change the name to "Titter", It is at least a DD! The boobie intake

No, but he's hired someone that does. This is all out-of-pocket expense for him, just to find out if it works. If you've got time, I recommend going through the whole thread to see how it's gotten to this stage.

Right now they're cutting the bellmouths on the back sides of the throttle body bases. They're like beautiful works of art...
